Children are like kites

Children Are Like Kites
Author: unknown to me
You spend a lifetime trying to get them off the ground.
You run with them until you're both breathless.
They crash.
They hit the rooftop.
You patch and comfort, adjust and teach them.
Finally they are airborne...
They need more string and you keep letting it out.
But with each twist of the ball of twine,
there is a sadness that goes with joy.
The kite becomes more distant,
and you know it won't be long
before that beautiful creature will snap the lifeline that binds you two together
and will soar as it is meant to soar, free and alone.
Only then do you know that you did your job. "
March arrives, the last hurrah of winter and the first whisper of spring.  Slowly our spirits reawaken,
along with the natural world, from a long winter's slumber.  Branches that just days ago were bare, now blossom with new growth.  Deep within we feel stirrings of hope.
Turn orver the earth in the inner garden.  Simplicity is the fertile soil of our souls.
From the book Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach

  1. Love the quote from Sarah. Interesting concept of children as kites too.

  2. This poem is by Erma Bombeck. I first read it in her column in the newspaper on the day my younger son was graduating from college!
